The Friendship Force of Thames Coromandel Inc. was chartered in 1989. We currently have 53 members, which includes families and single people. We welcome two inward exchanges each year and have had outward exchanges in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003, though many members have joined other New Zealand clubs on their outward exchanges.
Thames is recognised as the service centre of the Coromandel Peninsula. It is the main shopping centre on the peninsula, has an historic main street as well as the modern Goldfields Shopping Mall. Thames, in the late 19th century, was one of New Zealand's largest towns, built on the pioneering industries of gold and kauri logging. The colourful history is still alive in the pubs, buildings, museums and activities of the area. An informative description of the town and surrounding districts can be found on www.thecoromandel.com. Fringing the town, is the Firth of Thames, Hauraki Plains and dramatic hills of the Coromandel Range and the KauerangaValley.
The Auckland International Airport is 1½ hours away, where the ED and usually other members meet Ambassadors. On arrival in Thames, Ambassadors are met by their hosts and taken home. With a spectacular coastline, beautiful beaches and rugged volcanic hills cloaked in native rain forest, the club arranges various outings to show the diversity and history of our area. BBQs, pot-luck meals and club get-togethers are arranged to bring all hosts, club members and Ambassadors together, giving them an opportunity to get to know each other. The Friendship Force of Thames Coromandel assures you of an interesting and fun time.
